The next morning, I had readied a horse for my departure. My mind wrestled with my order. I have to do this, I thought to myself, for my beloved Sister. As I got upon my horse, Yorick walked into the stable. “Lain? where are you off to at this time of morning?” He asked, scanning situation. I hesitated then answered. “Family matters,” I said quickly, “My step mother is sick.” He stared at me, then nodded, “Alright, Sir.” He stepped out of the stable. I focused back on my mission, and rode off into the morning light.
The entire journey, I couldn’t stop thinking about Victoria. Her heart was broken and shattered into pieces, like a fine vase made up of thin glass. Not even her could pick up the pieces. Luckily, I am here to pick up the pieces of her shattered will, and form it back together with blood. Though this deed was a sin, my heart pulled to her kind and gentle request. I longed to make her happy. if it costs a life, then I shall.
When the sun reach the evening mark, I had also reach my destination. This time, the market was empty. the silence hummed in my ears and drilled to my core. I looked around, trying to find the manor of the Duke and Duchess. As I walked through the streets, the same phrase rang in my head. I would gladly turn Evil. My vow to her and my sister herself powered me on my journey for blood and happiness. Just to see her smile. her gentle, innocent smile.
It was getting dark, and the guards started to patrol the streets. I ducked and evaded their sight for a while. Then, I finally made it to the manor of the Duchess. The manor looked vastly different than our’s. The manor looked more like a church than a mansion. Giant spires crawled up the four sides of the manor. A brick wall surrounded the perimeter of the house. I crept closely to the wall and tried to scale it. The first tie, my grip failed and I fell onto my back. I quickly got up and tried to scale again. A few guard were rounding a corner just as I leaped over the wall.
Suddenly, I wasn’t in a town anymore, I was in a lush garden full of plants, trees, and a fountain. The lushness of the garden calmed my nerves. I paced around, looking in the high windows of the manor. A small light was on in the top room. That could be her room, I thought to myself. Then, a small ruffling came from behind me. I quickly spun around. The beautiful Duchess, Helen, stood before me. “Sir Lain…?” said the Duchess. I heaved in cold air and stared at her. Her eyes were full of curiosity and nervousness. “W-What are you doing here?” she asked. I sighed deeply, and paced closer to her. I fumbled with the small dagger I had in my pocket. “Helen…” I said, not sure what to say. She stepped closer to me, “What is it?” She placed her hand on my cheek. I swallowed hard, then looked her dead in the eyes. “I have been sent here to kill you,...” I said honestly. Her eyes widened as she stared into mine. “I’m sorry,” I looked away, pulling out the dagger, “I have no choice.” She forced a smile, then frowned again, “W-Well,...Atleast you’re a gentleman about it.”
I closed my eyes, and quickly sunk the dagger into her chest. She gasped lightly, tears falling down her face. I turned back to her, and started crying myself; a silent sob. The face of pain replaced her playful look she always had. She smiled to me, then hugged me, forcing the dagger deeper. Tears streamed down my face, like a floodgate had just been opened. I felt her slowly breathing finally stop, and her body fall against my chest. I took out the dagger carefully, and picked her up. I walked over and laid her by the fountain. I looked upon her face, tears stinging my eyes. She was still smiling lightly. I quickly retreated out of the garden and ran through the city. I I had finished my deed, and felt my work was down for now.
I rode all through the night, til near dawn. When I arrived back to the manor, I didn’t sleep. I waited in my study, til Victoria woke up. I sat in silence, pondering my actions. I would gladly to turn Evil. I stared at my lap, my head heavy with sleeplessness and release. I felt sad, but, I forced those feelings back.
After, for what felt like forever, the door creaked open. Behind it was Victoria. “Goodmorning, Brother.” She said to me. I forced a smile, “Goodmorning, Sister.” She ran over and hopped onto my lap. “What’s for breakfast?” She beamed. I pondered to myself, then spoke softly, “Today will be brioche.” She smiled then hugged me.
